Star Garden has been cooking Chinese-American classics, Hunan and Szechuan plates, Thai curries and hibachi in the same building on French Road since 1998. Twenty-seven years and counting, one family, one wok line, one recipe book that only ever gets added to.

The story
One kitchen, three cuisines, no shortcuts.
Star Garden opened as a Chinese-American takeout in 1998. Same block, same phone number, same recipe for the crab rangoon we still fold by hand every morning. The menu was smaller then — twenty-something Cantonese and Szechuan classics, a wonton soup, the sesame chicken that people still drive across town for.
Twenty-five years later, the wok line has grown. Nineteen numbered chef specialties now sit at the top of the menu — Hunan, Szechuan and Cantonese. A separate Thai list — pad thai, coconut curry basil, and massaman curry with the potatoes and peanuts done properly — was added when a family friend from Bangkok came to cook with us in 2007. Six hibachi plates came later, off a grill we installed the year the airport expanded.
It's still the same kitchen. Everything is cooked to order. The duck sauce and the crispy noodles that come with your order are made here, not opened from a box. That's the part reviewers on Tripadvisor keep bringing up — and it's the part we won't stop doing.
What we cook
Three lists on one stove.
Chinese-American
The canon: General Tso's chicken, sesame chicken, lo mein, egg rolls, wonton soup. Alongside it, nineteen numbered chef specialties in Hunan, Szechuan and Cantonese styles — heat when you want it, quiet when you don't. If you've eaten Chinese takeout in Erie County, you've eaten this list somewhere. Ours is the one people keep coming back to.
Thai
Pad thai with the tamarind pulled proper. Coconut curry basil — chicken, beef, shrimp, or house special. Massaman curry with potatoes, peanut, fried shallots and the pasta the recipe actually calls for. Not "Chinese with a Thai section" — a real Thai list cooked next to the wok, added in 2007 and refined every year since.
Hibachi
Six plates from a proper flat-top grill: chicken, vegetable, beef, shrimp, scallop, and the combination that sends most tables home with leftovers. Served with steamed rice and the same vegetable mix — zucchini, onion, broccoli, carrot, snow pea. Simple, high heat, done in minutes.

The neighborhood
A block off Union, near the Galleria.
899 French Road sits between Union Road and Harlem Road in Cheektowaga — about three and a half miles from Walden Galleria, four and a half from the airport, and less than a mile from both the West Seneca and Depew lines. Regulars drive in from Lancaster. Delivery reaches Sloan and the east side of Buffalo.
Parking is on site, off Union. If you're not sure whether your street is inside our ten-mile delivery line, call and ask. We'll tell you straight whether we can get it to you hot.
A note from the kitchen
We're a small kitchen. If you call between five and eight on a Friday, please give us a few minutes on hold — we're at the wok. If you're picking up, drive around back off Union; parking is easier. If you're eating in, bring a friend. The portions were never designed for one.
